Merrick | 'We’ve got to take a little bit of accountability'

Beth Merrick is looking for Wolves Women to respond positively following Wednesday’s defeat to Halifax.

The Old Gold saw their seven-game winning run come to an end and Merrick, who made her 100thappearance for the club on the night, believes the players need to take some accountability for not taking their chances. Wolves end the league season with a trip to Liverpool Feds on Sunday and Merrick is keen to finish with all three points on the road.

On coming away with a defeat

“We’re really disappointed and we’ve come away quite deflated from that so we’ll get in tomorrow, analyse it and put things right.

“Straight after the game it’s really disappointing. I had moments where I potentially should’ve done better.

“Defensively for the large portion of the game, we were really solid and I think as a group of people on the forward line I think we’ve got to take a little bit of accountability where we just haven’t taken our chances tonight.

“There were certainly chances for us to draw the game and even go on and win. As a forward unit, we’ve got to do better.

“It doesn’t always happen and we can maybe put it down to one of those games, but we’ve got to be more clinical.”

On wanting to finish on a high at Liverpool Feds

“When you’ve had a loss like that, you just want to get back on the pitch tomorrow if you could.

“Our record at Liverpool Feds is also really poor – I think someone said we’ve never won there. I know there’s only been two games, but we’ll certainly be going there to put everything right, especially in our last league game.

“We want to finish as high as we can. That’s been the main aim all the way through this last period.

“It’s a shame to lose our run of wins but we’ll go into the next game full of confidence and raring to go.”

On reaching their own standards

“When we reflect on moments during the season there will be nothing but pride, but slight disappointment.

“The standards we’ve set ourselves over the last two years means it’s always going to be like that.

“We’ll have to go away and really reflect on that as individuals, as a team, as a coaching staff and then regroup and see what next season holds.

“For now, it’s just focusing on that last league game and that cup final in a couple of weeks’ time.”
